For CYO's first concert since December 2019, we are going to do something very special. We are going to be Bridging The Gap with our friends True Tides.

The amazing 2019 event was our last live concert and we are delighted to announce that True Tides are back with us for one concert only on Saturday, May 21st at 8pm. We know how much fun it was when True Tides played with us at our concert in December 2019 and we are sure we will all have the same fun this time! Some new songs and launching their new single. We are all really excited about being back in the City Hall which up to very recently was being used as a Vaccination centre. We didn’t think that we would be in the City Hall before next Christmas.

We expect the tickets to go quickly as our wonderful supporters are already busy snapping them up. Thank you to all of our followers for sticking with us over the past two years. We have been working very hard in the background rehearsing for our first performance and hope you can all be with us for this very special event. We are looking forward to having the Performers Academy Choir back with us again for the concert. We only have four rehearsals left before the concert so it is closer than you think! Click on the yellow link above now to get your tickets.

Cork Youth Orchestra at their new rehearsal facility - Ursuline Secondary School, Blackrock, Cork.

Harris Group supporting the return of Cork Youth Orchestra

Harris Group provides Cork Youth Orchestra with a number of Swiss Air Purifiers that allows the Orchestra to safely return to rehearsal

Harris Group, Ireland's leading commercial vehicle distributor, is delighted to announce its continued partnership with Cork Youth Orchestra. In addition to financial support, Harris Group has also provided a number of Swiss Air Purifiers that allows the Orchestra to safely return to rehearsing and preparing for upcoming concerts. Cork Youth Orchestra, under musical director Tomás McCarthy, has also found a new home for its rehearsals, Ursuline Secondary School in Blackrock, Cork.

Denise Harris, Harris Group CEO said: “I am thrilled to see Cork Youth Orchestra back again and stronger than ever. There is no doubt that the last 18 months has been difficult for everyone, but it must have been exceptionally hard on young people who are passionate about playing music and showcasing their creativity.

“Harris Group has a long history of working with businesses in and around Cork City so our partnership with Tomás and the Orchestra is a wonderful opportunity to give back and to invest in the Cork community. I'm really looking forward to seeing Cork Youth Orchestra back in concert very soon."

Founded in 1958, the Cork Youth Orchestra is firmly embedded in the cultural fabric of Cork and Ireland's oldest and largest youth orchestra with over 130 members, between 13-18 years of age.

Tomás McCarthy, Musical Director for the Cork Youth Orchestra said: We are delighted with the continued support from Harris Group. We would have found it very difficult to rehearse safely in numbers without the donation of the Air Purifiers and the financial support really helps with our costs, which have been substantial this year.

“We have been very fortunate to find a wonderful new home to rehearse in the Ursuline Secondary School. We have invested a significant amount to help to prepare the school hall in terms of acoustics for Orchestra rehearsals so support such as that from Harris Group is extremely welcome."

Tomás added: “I would also like to acknowledge Patrick McBeth, Principal at Ursuline Secondary School for allowing us use the school's fantastic facilities; without it we really wouldn't be in a position to return safely."

Cork Youth Orchestra is launching #trees4change in Ireland, a new positive action, climate change project, to renew our environment in Tramore Valley Walk this November.

Playing violins in park

The goal of the #trees4change campaign is to reduce the carbon footprint of Cork Youth Orchestra by planting up to 1,000 native Irish trees in Tramore Valley Walk by the end of November this year, with the support of the families, friends, past members of Cork Youth Orchestra and Cork City Council

As an organisation, CYO are nurturing young musicians from the generation that will be tasked with dealing with the damaging consequences of climate change and we are implementing a new positive environment initiative.

Commenting on the #trees4change campaign, Tomás McCarthy, conductor of CYO said, "Since 1958 the CYO has generated paper, equivalent to approximately 100 trees and many of our instruments have been crafted from trees. We aim to replace these 100 with 1,000 trees initially. As a result, we are launching this project, #trees4change in Ireland, in an attempt to reinstate what we are taking out of the environment. We feel that the most beneficial and far-reaching environmental action we can take is by planting native Irish trees (Oak, Willow, Rowan, Hazel, Birch). We have challenged our members and families to help us with this tree planting initiative, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of Cork Youth Orchestra and especially raising awareness among members. This is a positive action, climate change project."

Playing violins in park

Native Irish Trees play an overwhelmingly positive role in carbon sequestration, biodiversity, water filtration, flood control, soil fertility security, recreation and wellbeing. The planting of 6 trees, could help neutralise the amount of carbon one person would generate in a lifetime.

CYO would welcome support from members of local communities to join in. If you wish to support them in their #trees4change campaign you can make a contribution of €20 to CYO and for this the Cork Youth Orchestra will plant 5 native Irish trees (Oak, Willow, Rowan, Hazel, Birch), on your behalf. It’s a small price for a greener future.
